SLAQ Awards

Brian Bahnisch Award

Purpose: A biennial award to recognise and encourage collaborations and partnerships involving teacher-librarians, teachers and members of the school community.

Award winners
2008: Stanthorpe State High School
2006: Aquinas College
2004: Kurwongbah State School

 

 Criteria

  • the teacher-librarian must be a current financial member of the School Library Association of Queensland by virtue of personal or school membership
  • the application reflects a partnership over a significant period of time involving the teacher-librarian, classroom teacher/s and /or  other members of the school/educational community, and there is evidence of:
    • a collaborative process in the planning of the project
    • a collaborative process in the implementation of the project
    • a positive impact on student learning outcomes, e.g. statements from the principal, teachers, students and parents: qualitative and quantitative evaluation data (evidence may be in oral and/or written form)
  • the project can be seen to have a life beyond the current team members
  • the project has potential for broader impact beyond students and school to a wider educational community
  • the project  demonstrates excellence in teacher-librarianship for others in the profession by identifying:
    • the teacher-librarian as curriculum leader, through the use of innovative pedagogical ideas, resource-based learning strategies  and curriculum knowledge
    • the teacher-librarian as information specialist, through the use and  integration of such aspects as information literacy, ICT and literacy understanding.

 Nature of the award

Each member of the project team will receive an individual plaque. A separate plaque will be presented to the school for display, identifying the recipients by name, and the reason for the award.

 

Process and conditions of acceptance

  • the award is made biennially, in the state conference year
  • principals of all schools with a current membership of the association (either school or personal) will receive the application brochure
  • applications must be received by the last day of the month, 2 months prior to the date of the SLAQ conference ( in 2010 the date is 31 July)
  • schools on the shortlist will be advised 4 weeks before the date of the conference (in 2010 the date is 31 August)
  • all shortlisted schools should be represented at the conference where the award winning school will be announced.
  • the winning school’s nomination will be the basis for an article for the SLAQ newsletter and Access journal and the group will be invited to present a session at the next biennial conference.

At the discretion of the judging panel an unsuccessful shortlisted school may be considered for a commendation certificate.

  

Selection process

The selection of the winner rests solely with the Award committee. The final selection may be validated by a visit from at least one member of the committee.

The Award committee will consist of a minimum of 3/maximum of 5 people drawn from the following:

  • principals representing different levels of education
  • a representative from a tertiary institution
  • a representative from Education Queensland, BCEC, QSITE, ASIQ, CBCQ or other related professional association
  • SLAQ President (or nominee/delegate from SLAQ Executive)

If no application sufficiently meets the criteria to be deemed worth of the Award, the Award may be held in abeyance or the committee may reopen the application process

 

Nominations

Nominations may be made by peers, administrators, teachers or other members of the school/educational community
