Welcome everyone to the SLAQ Brisbane Sub-committee AGM for 2011. Thank you all for coming especially half way through a very long, very busy term.
I would like to pre-empt my report with a reminder that all sub-committee positions were declared vacant on February 8. I know many of you are reluctant to be nominated for a committee position and are worried that you know nothing of the job you are signing up for. That can be a little intimidating but I would like to assure everyone that if you were to nominate, the existing team would be very happy to have you shadow them for a year, so you can learn the ropes – as it were. Many of the people who have been nominated this year have taken these positions on for several years and we would love to have new blood on the team, with fresh ideas and enthusiasm. Committee membership is PD that money cannot buy. You will work in a team of dedicated professionals whose goal is to provide SLAQ members with the opportunity to engage in reflective practice and professional renewal and to create and maintain supportive learning environments. It provides an opportunity to be involved in a very real sense in the Teacher Librarian community. So if you have the time to spare and the desire to be involved – I urge you to consider nominating. We are all available to have a chat if you are ever interested.
I would like to thank the 2010 committee members, Cathy, Anne, Edwina,& Liz for allowing me to be a part of the team. It is a privilege to work with such dedicated professionals.
The ISAL/SLAQ 2010 conference planning, preparation and implementation under-pinned everything we did as a committee last year. Indeed, your dedicated conference committee met continuously, emailed prodigiously, budgeted responsibly, organised tirelessly and delivered one of the best international TL conferences ever. The feedback we received from delegates was overwhelmingly positive
Owing to the heavy demand placed upon committee members by the conference, the Brisbane sub-committee decided that it would be the main focus for professional development for 2010. However, your team did continue the Brisbane sub-committee’s obligation to provide relevant PD for our members every term:
- During first term we invited you to take up the free opportunity provided by QUT to hear author Patrick Ness speak about his books – The Chaos Walking Trilogy – The Knife of Never Letting Go, The Ask and the Answer and Monsters of Men.
- During Term 2 SLAQ members , Cathy Oxley, Robbie Rentz and Anne Weaver delivered a one day Book Trailer workshop, to a packed audience. The team demonstrated how to create book trailers and promote books using a variety of readily available technology and materials. Again the feedback was extremely positive with many northern TLs asking if we had plans to bring the workshop to the tropics.
- The Senate Inquiry into school libraries and teacher librarians was a demanding time for many TLs, collecting case studies, writing submissions and giving evidence in defence of our position as professional was at times a harrowing experience. We have yet to be advised of the inquiry’s recommendations.
- The Joint IASL/SLAQ conference delivered the best TL PD in Australia this year. Congratulations to all those involved.
- Our Christmas function was well attended with a lovely brunch held at Freestyle at the Emporium.
I know 2011 will bring its own rewards and the committee will continue to meet its obligations to members regarding advocacy, professional development and mentoring. I would like to now table my report.
