2010 saw our local committee cruise along with the usual ups and downs. Many of us have had the exciting or maybe challenging task of a new BER library. Others continued to tiptoe through the mine field that we call Administration. Throughout it all we still always manage to put on a smile and do the best that we can for our clientele and most importantly, turn up for meetings and support each other.

Lively Libraries was again a success with a large number of satisfied participants and many of our members were able to attend the highly rated SLAQ/IASL Conference in Brisbane in September.

Jenny and I ran a successful Reader’s Cup again and increased our participation. Our major disappointment with this is our lack of participation from Rocky schools. We will be aiming to improve this in 2011 and look at a possible venue change to be part of a Literary Festival that Ann-Marie is planning to hold at the new Rockhampton Regional Library. (Grant application has been lodged.) This is also a possible option for doing something a little different with Lively Libraries this year.

Like all years, 2011 will present us all with many challenges as we see our roles again changing, the rise of ebooks and electronic readers, and more i-technology. Principal expectations continue to rise but support does not always match this. The changing face of Libraries is going to be under scrutiny particularly in the next few years. Huge amounts of money are being invested in building these Libraries but it will be interesting to see what will be invested in personnel to staff them. I will be curious to see what state SLAQ is investing in this process and what if any consultation occurred.

I would like to see 2011 as a year when we continue to promote the book as an important part of what we do. I personally think everyone should share “It’s a Book” with everyone they can. I would also like to see us as a group, provide ourselves with some PD in use of the new Learning Place and Web 2 tools. These are areas where I can best see us supporting our staff. I am also interested in where DET’s ICT Pedagogical Licence for TLs will be focussing.

Wishing everyone a year without too many stresses.
