President's Report to AGM 2 March 2011
There were several major impacts on the Teacher Librarian profession in 2010. The first was the Senate Inquiry into the role of Teacher librarians and libraries, with several of our members submitting a response. It was also the year of the Building Education Revolution or BER, with a number of schools in the Sunshine Coast benefiting from this initiative with new halls or new libraries.
I attended the Presidents and Councillor face to face meeting early in 2010, along with Jill Duffield and Jodie Donohue. This meeting focussed on discussing and writing key points for a SLAQ submission to the Senate Inquiry.
2010 saw the discussion about e-books and the impact on libraries continue.
I attended, along with quite a few of my Sunshine Coast colleagues, a very informative day at Sunshine Coast Grammar School with publishers providing information about how their organisations are approaching e-books. This is an issue which is going to impact significantly in the text hire schemes and as Teacher-librarians we are all considering the impact it will have on our collections.
The Sunshine Coast sub-committee ran a very successful PD half day in term two. Those who attended the day responded positively to the speakers, the Qld CBC book week judge, National Curriculum Information presented by Independent Schools QLd and an Oliver Q & A session provided by Softlink. Thanks to Graeme Smith from Immanuel Lutheran College for hosting this day, Jill Duffield from Matthew Flinders for being a key organiser and Adie Read for her role as treasurer and chief caterer on the day.
During 2010 the SLAQ conference was held in conjunction with the IASL conference in Brisbane and while I was not able to attend, as I was supervising a group of Lacrosse players in Adelaide, I am told it was a very good conference. Our term four meeting had several of our Sunshine Coast members share information that they got at the conference and this generated a good discussion at our meeting.
2010 was also the year that I started my Masters in Education – Teacher Librarianship through QUT. The first subject Learning Hubs focussed on the role of Teacher Librarian and the school library, it provided an opportunity for me to reflect on my role in relation to the ASLA Teacher Librarian standards. I would recommend that everyone take some time in their schedules to read the standards and reflect on how they are meeting them. In the course of our busy days and work commitments it is easy to loose sight of the key aspects of our role in schools.
Once again I thank the close knit group of Teacher Librarians whom I am privileged to work with. As we all know the role of Teacher Librarian can be very isolating in a school and I find it personally very important to be an active member of this group.
