St Patrick's Senior College Mackay is a co-educational, Catholic, systemic school for Year Eleven and Twelve which offers an extensive curriculum of OP and VET based subjects. The College mission statement emphasises that we are a partnership between students, parents and staff that recognises students as young adults. As St Patrick's the wider curriculum seeks to develop students mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually. In preparing students to take their part in the wider society, students are encouraged to see education as a lifelong process with schooling as a beginning not an end in itself. Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning and to develop as independent learners. As students are encouraged to develop their maximum potential, they are encouraged to strive for excellence in all they undertake. The college community values academic, general and vocational education and students are encouraged to select courses that relate to their individual needs.
Our Diocesan family is one in which each member accepts a call from God to serve the educational communities in this Diocese. This response exists within and is given meaning by our birth to death Charter, the Bishop's Vision Statement and our Diocesan Catholic Education Office Missions Statement. We are committed to building right relationships, to working in partnerships, to quality learning and teaching and, above all, to the promotion of the message of Christ in real and meaningful ways. Our primary purpose in our search for Meaning for Life is to serve lifelong learners in the Diocese of Rockhampton and we hope that by our efforts we are Making a Difference in our schools, parishes and the wider community.

Art on Cairncross, Maleny
Judith Laws has been highly-regarded for her vibrant and expressive paintings for many years, but she has now gained a whole new audience of admirers. The artist has very generously donated no less than 100 copies of her book, Laws, to Education Queensland for distribution across school libraries.
This is a magnanimous gesture indeed, as these are beautifully produced hardback books with over 50 colour plates which certainly will provide a huge amount of inspiration for students. Equally at home on a coffee table, it is delightful to know that such a quality book will be available as a resource for school students. Judith strongly believes in good education and realised through her own grandchildren that many school libraries were under-stocked, especially in areas such as art, due to the higher cost of these books and so she has found a way to make a real difference in her own field.
Laws was written by acclaimed artist, Rex Backhaus-Smith, who has perhaps more knowledge about Judith's art than anyone else. The book has an insight into the artist's career, some early line drawings and a rich array of her wonderful paintings depicting a variety of subjects from the lush tropics of Queensland to the grace and poise of dancers in Bali, from the glorious colours of native parrots to the sparkling coastline of the Greek Islands. Her artworks are a great way to teach children how to be truly expressive in their own paintings because the artist conveys her feelings in her work. They show the advantages of using mixed media to effect and they also demonstrate how inspiration can be gathered from your own garden as much as from exotic locations .... this is especially true if like the artist, Queensland happens to be home!
Judith hopes that her book will be a help to art teachers, a useful reference for students and naturally that this will apply to an ever increasing number of people as each year has a new intake. Judith Laws is to be commended for this extremely thoughtful and kind donation, it is such a positive piece of news at a time when all too often education news is about problems and barriers.
Judith Laws' paintings and copies of her book are available through Art on Cairncross near Maleny.
